Here we can discuss all the questions you may have about Skype Sessions and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT).
We can talk about the problem and your goals, and how online therapy can help you personally.
This consultation helps me prepare for our first complete session the most adequate support materials (e.g. CBT handouts, therapeutic recordings) to facilitate that you gain some relief and further motivation right away.
At the end of this initial consultation, if you’d like to, we can make an appointment for our first complete session.
If you would like to take some time, I can provide you with additional material about cognitive therapy and a personalized treatment plan, based on our consultation. Alternatively, If I conclude that another type of therapy would be best for you, I will be happy to give some guidance on finding the right psychotherapy for you, and would assist you in the process.
Online Therapy via Skype can have the following advantages:
You can have a personal therapy session in the comfort of your home, without the cost and time of travelling.
Skype Therapy sessions cost less and there is more flexibility when making appointments.
Studies show that online therapy has the same effectiveness as traditional face to face therapy.
You will get access to further support materials via email (mp3 recordings tailored to your goals, reading materials).
Relaxation training, Mindfulness training, and many types of Coping Skills training work perfectly well and is delivered on Skype as well. Additionally, the client can use his/her therapeutic mp3 recordings alone between sessions (with prior guidance and instructions from the therapist).
Phone only (without video) sessions can also be arranged, if that is the preference.
I am passionate about sharing with people the long term benefits of an effective, evidence-based form of therapy. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy helps us understand the interaction between our inner experiences: our thoughts, beliefs, emotions, moods and behaviour. This enhanced understanding of our current patterns, gives way to create a more healthy and harmonic functioning of these parts of ourselves. It helps us build a way of being that is more in line with our goals and values in life.
In cognitive behavioural therapy we work together exploring new, more helpful ways in which you can deal with stressful situations and difficult emotions. We focus mostly on the present and aim to build patterns of thinking, feeling and acting that will help you overcome: Anxieties, Stress, Panic Attacks, Fears, Low Self-esteem or Unhealthy Habits.
The average treatment length in Skype Therapy with CBT is around 6-10 sessions. It can take 2-6 or more than 10 sessions for successful treatment, depending on the presented issue. We collaboratively put together a plan that we find reasonable and always monitor how we are doing regarding our goals.
Therapy does not stop at the end of sessions. In this approach, we find it very important to always agree on certain therapeutic assignments between sessions. It is a kind of extension of therapy, that facilitates the manifestation of meaningful changes in client’s everyday lives.
These therapeutic assignments can be: Practising evidence-based relaxation or meditation techniques; Listening to therapeutic mp3 recordings; Engaging in behavioural exercises (e.g. facing anxiety provoking situations in a graduated way with learned coping skills); Filling in brief records of exercises; Reading materials about therapy (given by me, or in a recommended book).
The first session is 75 minutes. The extra time ensures that we have a good basis with a thorough assessment for the following work. With many issues, this first session will allow us to start working directly on the problem, thus gaining some immediate relief and further inspiration.
At the end of the first session we agree on a plan for treatment, including the estimated length of therapy (This estimation is also based on research data on the typical treatment outcome of that type of problem). After assessing the presented issue in detail, specifying goals, and agreeing with you on the plan and details of therapy, we can start our collaborative work towards your goals in a solution focused manner.
As a result of the first session:
You will have a clearer understanding of the nature of the problem: Its components, origin, how it is maintained, what we know about the best ways of overcoming it.
You will learn how evidence-based Cognitive Behavioural, Relaxation & Meditation methods can help you personally.
You will receive relevant reading materials about the methods & concepts we use in our work.
I consider knowing my sphere of competence and providing the best available care for clients essential. As a psychologist, I am able to use adequate tools for assessing problems. If at the end of the first consultation I conclude that the presented issue does not fit in my treatment profile, I will assist you in finding the most adequate professional care for your problem.
